When adding journeys in the Conductor Sam travel planner you may see notes stating 'Not on x date'.
This typically indicates that this train, or sequence of journey, is on the usual timetable, but it won't, or may not be, available on this specific date.

This scenario is most likely caused by engineering works on the railway, which is closing a section of track between two locations, or at a particular station.

The overwhelming majority of this work is carried out overnight when fewer passenger trains will be affected.
Though this makes night trains and the first and last departures of the day particularly susceptible to alterations.

If a project will require disruption over one or two days, it is typically carried out at weekends.

As this night and weekend work typically involves more than a hundred projects across Europe per week, they haven't been included on the summary below.

If you see 'Not on X date' when using the planner to look up a weekend departure, or are otherwise wondering why you can't find an expected train on a Saturday or Sunday, you check for national updates on the links below.

Summary of Major Longer Term Projects

These are the construction sites which:

• are affecting long-distance services
• will impact on services for a minimum of a week
• will be

1. causing diversions with longer journey times and some usual station calls omitted, or
2. resulting in replacement by bus on a section of the route, or
3. causing a temporary withdrawal of all services, or
4. leading to reductions in the usual service
5. trains turning around short of their usual destinations

It's a good idea to double check the availability of train services around the start and end dates of the works listed above.

Work can often be scheduled to begin shortly before midnight or end in the early hours of the morning, meaning that the bulk of the days on the start / end dates can be unaffected.  

Routes from and to Salzburg: Feb 8th to July 9th 2027

Salzburg is not only a beautiful city, it's also a major hub on the European rail network.
It's where the Zurich - Innsbruck - Vienna - Budapest east <> west route meets the Munich - Bad Gastein - Villach - Ljubljana north <> south route.

However, from Feb 8th to July 9th both routes will have sections that are to be shut down due to reconstruction work:

(1) between the Austria / Germany border station at Freilassing and the junction station at Rosenheim.

(2) between Schwarzach-St.Veit and Spittal-Millstätter See stations

The impacts on the long-distance trains which typically use the route through Freilassing are: (not all station calls have been included in these summaries):

• The trains on the Bregenz - Feldkrich - St Anton - Innsbruck - Worgl - Kufstein - Salzburg - Linz - Wien / Vienna route will be operating every other hour Bregenz <> Kufstein, with buses available Kuftstein <> Salzburg.

• The trains on the Zurich - Buchs - Feldkrich - St Anton - Innsbruck - Worgl - Kufstein - Salzburg - Linz - Wien / Vienna route will still be available every other hour, but will be diverted between Worgl and Salzburg to call at Schwarzach-St.Veit, St. Johann im Pongau and Bischofshofen. This will extend the journey times to/from Salzburg, Linz and Wien by around 1hr 55 mins. The Zurich - Wien - Bratislava direct train will still be available, but the Zurich - Wien - Budapest daytime train will be turning around in Wien. Though an additional Innsbruck <> Budapest train will be available which will have connections in Innsbruck with the unaffected Zurich <> Graz EC train.
• The Zurich - Wien - Budapest overnight trains will be diverted with extended journey times.
• The Railjet (RJX) trains on the Munchen / Munich - Salzburg - Linz - Wien / Vienna - Budapest route will be diverted between Munchen and Linz with the stop in Salzburg replaced by a stop in Passau - this will extend journey times by around 40 mins.
• The Munchen - Wien - Budapest overnight train will be diverted with extended journey times.
• The trains operated by Westbahn on its Wien West <> Munchen, Feldkirch and Innsbruck routes will only be operating Wien West <> Salzburg

The long-distance trains which typically take the Munich - Salzburg - Schwarzach-St.Veit - Bad Gastein - Spittal-Millstätter - Villach route ordinarily pass through both construction sites.
Hence from Feb 8th to July 9th the following services will be temporarily removed from the timetable:

• The Railjet trains which take a Munich - Salzburg - Schwarzach-St.Veit - Bad Gastein - Spittal-Millstätter - Villach - Klagenfurt - Graz - Wien / Vienna route.
• The EC trains on the Munich - Salzburg - Schwarzach-St.Veit - Bad Gastein - Spittal-Millstätter - Villach - Lesce-Bled - Ljubljana - Zagreb route.
• The Nightjet trains on the Munich - Villach - Bologna - Firenze/Florence - Roma route.
• The Nightjet trains on the Stuttgart - Munich - Villach - Udine - Venezia / Venice route.
• The night trains on the Munich / Zurich - Ljubljana - Zagreb routes.

Plus these services / routes will be drastically altered:

• ICE trains, which since December 2025, have been operating on Koln / Cologne / Frankfurt (Main) - Munich - Salzburg - Schwarzach-St.Veit - Bad Gastein - Spittal-Millstätter - Villach - Klagenfurt - Graz routes, will be turning around in Munich and won't be serving Austria.
• The Nightjet trains on the Vienna - Linz - Stuttgart - Villach - Udine - Venezia / Venice route will be diverted to a Vienna - Graz - Villach - Udine - Venezia / Venice route.
• The IC trains on the Salzburg - Schwarzach-St.Veit - Bad Gastein - Spittal-Millstätter - Villach route will only be operating Salzburg <> Schwarzach-St.Veit.

To mitigate against these alterations, two routes by EC expres trains are being temporarily introduced - both of which will have 2 x trains per day in each direction:

1. Munich - Rosenheim - Kuftsein - Worgl - Kitzbuhel - Zell am See - Schwarzach-St.Veit - St. Johann im Pongau - Bischofshofen - Radstadt - Seltzhal - Leoben - Graz route.
2. Munich - Muhldorf - Salzburg - Bischofshofen - St. Johann im Pongau - Schwarzach-St.Veit

In summary from Feb 8th to July 9th, the only long-distance trains serving Salzburg will be:

• the usual hourly IC trains on the Wien Hbf <> Salzburg route;
• 2 x trains per hour operated by Westbahn on a Wien West <> Salzburg route; as per usual 3 x trains per day will be extended beyond Salzburg from / to Zell am See and Saalfden.
• a Railjet (RJX) train operating every other hour on a Wien Hbf <> Salzburg route;
• a Railjet (RJX) train operating every other hour on the Wien Hbf - Salzburg route - Worgl - Innsbruck - Feldkirch - Zurich route; These will be the only direct Wien / Vienna <> Innsbruck rail services during this time.
• 2 x trains per day on a Munich - Muhldorf - Salzburg - Bischofshofen - St. Johann im Pongau - Schwarzach-St.Veit route; This will be the only direct Munich <> Salzburg rail service during this time.
